Ugly Betty
I always too issue with the characterization of Betty’s character as “ugly.” Although I know it’s meant to be satirical, it’s a tough obstacle to overcome when you’re the lead female role. Betty’s future was left intentionally ambiguous. She was off to London and had dinner with Daniel…
These days, Betty is back stateside and done with Daniel. She’s the editor of her own female-centric website that has none of the old toxic values about women’s looks. She is an icon for empowerment and self-acceptance and travels the country speaking to girls’ groups about the importance of self-esteem.
She’s far too busy and focused to have a serious relationship, but she really looks forward to the day when she can settle down and have children of her own.
Wilhelmina left her career in publishing and used all her wealth and influence to semi-retire to an island in the British Virgin Islands. She spends her days with cabanas boys who wait on her hand and foot and she plays a mean hand of bridge. She still has her scheming ways, and she’s been known to steal a beach bunny’s older sugar daddy or cheat her way into the Presidency of her local Professional Women’s Organization.
Daniel still lives in London with his dear mother. He’s still a swinging bachelor, but he’s resigned to the ever-changing rotation of lovely socialites with which he spends most weekends. Claire is content to live out her golden years in the company of some dear friends she’s made – mostly women left over from a time when Downton Abbey was current events.
