My So-Called Life

Sadly, we only got one season of this teen drama. But it’s really one of the most influential shows for its groundbreaking treatment of adolescence. Watching Angela Chase give in to her morose tendencies, sulk about life as a teenager, and pine over her crush Jordan Catalano validated my very existence. She was the voice of a female generation.

In its last episode, her long time, unrequited love, asked her best friend, who was hopelessly in love with Angela, to pen a letter to her. The show ended with a voiceover reading this letter:

"Dear Angela, I know in the past I’ve caused you pain and I’m sorry. I’ll always be sorry till the day I die. I hate this pen I’m holding because I should be holding you. And I hate this paper under my hand because it isn’t you … I even hate this letter because it’s not the whole truth, because the whole truth is so much more than a letter can even say. If you want to hate me go ahead. If you want to burn this letter go ahead, do it. You could burn the whole world down. You could tell me to go to hell. I’d go if you wanted me to. I’d send you a letter from there. Sincerely, Jordan Catalano"

Even though we know Jordan didn’t write it, we still swooned. Even though we knew he felt it, we still rooted in this toxic relationship. Now, Angela has learned her lesson about dumb boys who won’t love her back.

Angela’s experiences with Jordan led her to pursue psychology in college. So she went on to write the most famous self-help books about co-dependent women. She is a regular consultant on morning shows, and she has a contract with Dr. Phil for weekly appearances. Take that, Jordan Catalano, with your soulful eyes and glorious hair.
