Katherine Waterston’s Butch Alien Haircut Came From Fantastic Beasts

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was the unlikely inspiration for Katherine Waterston’s Alien: Covenant haircut.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them star Katherine Waterston is stepping into another mega huge movie franchise. After taking on the role of Tina Goldstein in Fantastic Beasts, Waterston will also be playing the lead character of Daniels in Ridley Scott’s new film Alien: Covenant. The Wizarding World of the 1920s is lightyears away from the outer space locale of the Aliens films, but Waterston has found a way to merge the two.

Speaking to Australian outlet TheFix, Waterston revealed her haircut was copied from Ezra Miller’s hair in Fantastic Beasts!

"“I stole Ezra Miller’s haircut from Fantastic Beasts. I was doing that movie and I loved his haircut. We were still shooting when I was hired for this and I started to see that hair on her and so I put on one of his wigs and I thought, ‘I think I’m going to do this.'”"

Waterston also said that her hair grows so fast. She needed to get it cut weekly to maintain the cropped style.

Miller’s haircut was a much talked about part of Fantastic Beasts, particularly amongst Ezra Miller’s fans. Buzzfeed called it “tragic,” Revelist wondered if it was an intentional nod to Hitler’s Youth, and Miller himself called it a “mythologically terrible haircut.”

While Waterston’s take on the cut doesn’t seem to be as hotly debated as Millers, but I doubt the cut is going to inspire any more copycats. The choppy bowl cut is no Rachel, that’s for sure.
