A Game of Thrones and…Baseball? Yes, Really

Game of Thrones has decided it hasn’t captured enough of an audience, and so it has reached out to a major sports league for assistance.

We feel the need to preface this all with the statement that this is indeed real life and that it is really happening. If you need to pinch yourself, we understand. Our sister site, Winter is Coming, citing a report by Deadline, has reported that Game of Thrones will work together with Major League Baseball to promote the series this coming summer at parks. Apparently, the series isn’t huge enough, and the crossover between “people who go to baseball games” and “people who watch Game of Thrones” just isn’t big enough.

(Considering the hype that’ll build up as we get closer to the delayed release of season 7, who knows? It may end up working.)

Anyway, this gives us an idea, as these sorts of things so often tend to do.

What sort of baseball league would Westeros have?

Would the Northern Direwolves and the Casterly Lions have a bitter rivalry? Would the Lions be the equivalent of a team that has a huge payroll, like, say, the New York Yankees? (One assumes that everyone who isn’t a Lions fan also hates the Lions. This is the way of sports leagues.) Presumably the championship wouldn’t be called the World Series, though we think they’d keep the seven-game series format. Sevens do well in Westeros.

This also makes us wonder who runs the baseball league. It’s probably independent of the monarchy, but we all know it’d be heavily taxed under whatever dynasty takes charge after the end of the series. That coin could be used very well.

Is there a league in Essos, too, or would baseball refer to something else over there, like the fact that football means two very different things depending on where you are in the world?

We suppose we’ll have to settle for knowing that tourneys are still popular in Westeros.
