13. Asami (Audition)
On the surface, Audition seems uncomplicated. A lonely man thinks he’s found love with a beautiful young woman. They spend time getting to know each other and growing closer. However, that woman turns out to be downright deadly.
Yet, Audition has produced some complicated reactions. Some critics have claimed that it is a feminist work. Others argue that it’s misogynistic. Given such varied takes, it’s hard to predict where you, dear reader, may land.
Audition tells the story of Aoyama, a widower who is pushed to begin dating again by his son. A producer friend of his sets up a fake audition to “cast” someone for the real-life role of Aoyama’s girlfriend. It’s rightfully cringe-inducing, but Aoyama is captivated by a woman named Asami. Even when Aoyama’s friend says that he can’t find any of Asami’s references, the love-struck man forges ahead and asks her on a date.
While on vacation, Asami asks Aoyama to pledge his undying love to her. He agrees, and they spend the night together. When she disappears the next morning, Aoyama tries to track her down. It proves difficult, though he brushes against numerous disturbing reports of murder and dismemberment that may or may not be related to his absent lover.
Meanwhile, Asami breaks into Aoyama’s apartment. When she finds a picture of him with his late wife, she becomes enraged and drugs him. He awakens to find her preparing to torture and dismember him, as she has done to numerous other men. Like so many other horror villains, however, she eventually meets her own untimely end, but not before inflicting a significant amount of damage on the men in her life.
