Oscars: Was Jimmy Kimmel Funny As Host?

To no surprise, Jimmy Kimmel played it safe at the Oscars. As a late night host, he knows where the easy jokes are and decided to go for them at full speed.

We all know how Jimmy Kimmel got his gig at the Academy Awards this year. As ABC’s golden boy, the network has the creative rights to put anyone in front of the mic they want. Even if this person isn’t funny or wanted by the general public. Of course, I don’t mean that as a personal jab. When he hosted the Emmys, the ratings came in at an all-time low.

For his opening monolog, he didn’t shy away from politics or name-dropping any one of his many famous friends. Unfortunately, every joke seemed forced, with even more forced laughter from the audience.

Here’s the monolog below:

His best joke was the moment he turned to Meryl Streep and asked if she was wearing “an Ivanka.” For comparison, when Kate McKinnon came on to present the Oscar for Best Make-Up and Costume, the whole room was roaring. I didn’t even hear the whole thing, but it was funnier than Jimmy Kimmel. And I realized the difference is that McKinnon came up with something more original. Unfortunately, Jimmy Kimmel makes easy and obvious jokes. Everybody and their mother has made fun of Donald Trump’s tweet tirades.

Also, didn’t like how he went after Mahershala Ali’s name. I mean, his mother named him Eric Gilmore, which is a fairly Anglo name. Once he converted to Islam, he changed his name. Do your homework, Jimmy. Plus, as one of several late night hosts named Jimmy, maybe he should take a seat.

Obviously, we’re probably going to be seeing Jimmy host something again in the future. That’s perfectly fine (Not really, just get someone else — someone with energy), but somebody needs to help him with his jokes.
