Oscars 2017: Check Out All The Musical Performances

Though Oscars 2017 is in celebration of the year that was in movies, some of the biggest highlights of the show are the performances for Best Song.

Let’s face it, the Oscars, as a show are…well…boring.

They are. Other than oohing over the dresses before the show, what is there to watch? A bunch of white people stand around in clothes more expensive than a few years worth of our salary and congratulate each other? That’s not good TV. And the Oscars know it.

So we’d like to thank the Academy for having the wisdom to pepper throughout the interminable four-hour show a few song and dance numbers to help hold our attention. And we’d like to thank them again for not allowing Jimmy Kimmel to be the one who had to sing and dance through the opening number. Instead, we got Justin Timberlake to do the honors.

Check out the video.

Second up, Dwayne “Mr. The Rock” Johnson came out and teased his own performance of “You’re Welcome” before turning the floor over to Lin-Manuel Miranda and the newest Disney Princess on the scene, Auli’i Cravalho.

The third number was the sleepy Sting piece which I’m sure entertained some.

And, of course, there was the La La Land piano riff earworm that’s been stuck in many of our heads on and off since the movie began its march to the Oscar sea this past fall. John Legend did the honors.

If this performance made you wonder why they didn’t cast someone who could, you know, sing the song, in the movie — you’re in luck! John Legend’s performance is available for download starting this evening.

And of course, to top off the evening, we got a bonus Sara Bareilles performance singing Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now,” which accompanied the In Memoriam segment.

(By the way, nice way to slide in Bill Paxton, who died only yesterday, after the video was completed.)
