HOLLYWOOD, CA – FEBRUARY 26: Actor/singer Janelle Monae attends the 89th Annual Academy Awards at Hollywood

The Oscars are here! The biggest red carpet of the year brings out the stars in their best finery…or what their publicist thinks is their best finery.

Good evening, and welcome to one of the two biggest nights in the Fashion Industry. The Oscars, aka, the night where all the A-List stars show up the same red carpet in the same three-hour block of time, dressed to the nines in borrowed dressed, rented tuxes and loaned jewels.

This can be a make or break moment for the stars in question. Though supposedly the little golden trophies given out at the Dolby Theater are the highlight of the event, the truth is, it’s rare that people remember which actor or actress took home which award for what movie. On the other hand, everyone remembers that time Nicole Kidman Wore that Yellow Gown to the red carpet. Or that time Gwyneth Paltrow Wore that Pink Gown and won for…some movie. (It was Shakespeare in Love, but nevermind.) In some cases, working the red carpet can keep a career alive–Charlize Theron, for instance, kept her career going during fallow periods by being a reliable Red Carpet Top Ten Best Dressed.

So who tonight will make their careers? Who wore a gown for the ages? And who laid a Swan egg to rival Bjork? Let’s run the results down.
