Let Professor X Meet Deadpool Before Patrick Stewart Retires

For the most part, we can all agree that Deadpool was very faithful to the comics. So now it’s time to let him meet his recurring comic ally, Professor X.

The best part about Deadpool is, without a doubt, the fact that he appears as his true, genuine comic gag self. When the character was created, he represented the antithesis of everything other comic superheroes, like Spider-Man, stood for at the time. And when Tim Miller decided to adapt the movie that everyone’s been asking for, he put the pedal to the metal, got the greenlight on the R-rating and went for broke.

Of course, it helps that Ryan Reynolds was perfectly cast for this role. However, outside of his starpower (which is a word I hesitate to use, because outside of Deadpool, he has little box office money to his name) no other true movie stars appeared in this film. Deadpool’s crass humor was buoyed by Silicon Valley comedian T.J. Miller, sure. But mainstream audiences were probably more familiar with the giant metal man a.k.a Colossus. Since he appeared in the previous X-Men films, he was a pretty good tie-in to remind people that Deadpool is most often associated with the mutants.

In fact, at one point in the movie, he visits the school and makes several quips about how quiet it is. At this point, we all expected at least one more cameo. But as Deadpool also pointed out, there wasn’t enough money to go around. However, now that the movie’s proven to be a huge, award-nominated hit, I think it’s safe to say that Deadpool carries a little more loose change in his back pocket.

Which means, they can afford an appearance from the (second) most popular mutant himself: Professor X. Despite Stewart saying today in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that Logan will be his last outing with the franchise, we know he’s up for it.

While answering some questions on Twitter, Patrick Stewart (who has played Professor X from the very beginning) stated whether he’d like the two characters to meet. In his usual charming manner, he asked his Logan co-star Hugh Jackman to make it happen. In the video, he says, “Oh, I would love that. Just set it up. You have influence […] Make it happen, Hugh.”

Of course, Logan hits theaters next weekend as Deadpool 2 prepares to go into production. The future of Professor X is uncertain. With Stewart signalling that he’s tired of playing the character on a full time basis, that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t agree to a cameo.

Stewart’s best mate, Ian McKellen thinks it’s time for Professor X to die. But he’s obviously in the minority of people.
