Blanche Devereaux – The Golden Girls
Blanche Devereaux is my spirit animal and embodies everything that I want to be as a Southern white woman. Blanche, and all of the Golden Girls for that matter, is a pioneer for women of a certain age. Actually, Blanche is offering up goals for all women. Her wit, wisdom, freedom of spirit, and humor transcend generation, and I still want to be Blanche when I grow up.
A faithful and devoted wife to her husband for over forty years, Blanche had to start her life completely over after George died. She moved to the sunshine, took up with some really good friends, reinvented herself, and explored a new found sexuality. Refusing to slink off and spend the third phase of her life knitting and watching soaps, Blanche took control of her life and had more fun after 50 than most of us do in our ’20s.
Blanche was a brilliant friend and confidant, and she was her most authentic self, always. Far from a perfect person, Blanche struggled with plenty of issues, but she always kept and open mind and loving spirit. She wound changing her mind and position about many things over the years, and that just goes to show you that it’s never, ever too late to seize control of your own life.
