Netflix’s “The Discovery” Trailer Should Probably Come With A Trigger Warning

Netflix’s latest acquistion film “The Discovery” release its new trailer today. Trigger warnings to anyone with depression.

Netflix has taken to buying up movies at Sundance Film Festival, some of which probably consider it a death knell for their Oscar hopes. The Discovery had no such problems, as it opened at the festival to, at best mixed reviews.

Set in a very near future, The Discovery, which stars Jason Segel, Rooney Mara and Robert Redford explores a world where the Afterlife has been proven to exist, and actually as nice as everyone said it was going to be all this time. it’s an interesting thought experiment. What would the world do if there was suddenly other options than the one we have right now? The predictable wave of suicides this causes is well, trigger warning worthy. Seriously if you’re someone who gets triggered easily by such things, i would suggest skipping this trailer and perhaps this movie altogether.

In the middle of this self inflicted post apocalyptic type world, Segal and Mara meet and fall in love. But is it better to love in this world, or the next? That’s the philosophical argument at the heart of this love story.

The Discovery was conceived, written and directed by Charlie McDowell, who is best known for his smart science fiction debut effort The One I Love, which starred Elizabeth Moss. (And which I originally saw on Netflix. it doesn’t seem to be on there anymore, but perhaps they’ll add it back with the premiere of The Discovery.) This is his sophomore follow up, and despite the mixed reviews, should be on the lists of people who want to consider what the world would be like if there were alternative options.
