Tunes for Tuesday: The Oscar Nominees for Best Original Song

Once again, five songs have the chance to capture the Oscar for Best Original Song, but let’s honor them all as our Tunes for Tuesday.

With the Oscars (excuse us, the Academy Awards) coming up this Sunday, everyone’s in a rush to get their predictions onto paper. For some, that means becoming familiar with basically every piece of film you may have missed over the past year. Fortunately, you don’t need to watch all of the Oscar-nominated films to make a pick for Best Original Song.

First up, we have “City of Stars,” from La La Land:

“City of Stars” has already won the Golden Globe (and a Tune for Tuesday slot because of it). Honestly, it is likely a safe bet for Best Original Song as well because of that.

However, the Oscar could go to another song from La La Land, “Audition (The Fools Who Dream).”

Then again, they could cancel each other out, and isn’t it more fun to make a dark horse pick anyway? The answer is yes, at least to our way of thinking. Enter something like “Can’t Stop the Feeling” from Trolls, featuring the musical stylings of Justin Timberlake.

If nothing else, this song is ridiculously happy, and we’ll just pretend it didn’t come from Trolls.

For those Hamilton enthusiasts out there, your pick will almost certainly be “How Far I’ll Go,” since Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the music and lyrics. Here’s the film version with Auli’i Cravalho:

If “How Far I’ll Go” should win, Miranda will secure his EGOT.

“The Empty Chair” rounds out the five songs that could very well win the Oscar. It’s from Jim: The James Foley Story, and also features Sting.

Any of these five songs would make a worthy winner of the Oscar.

However, we just can’t stop the feeling (pun fully intended) that La La Land could dance away with this award. What are your Oscar predictions?
