Best Picture: Manchester By The Sea
Manchester By The Sea is a bleak and heavy-hearted drama starring Casey Affleck as Lee Chandler, a haunted man whose brother Joe (Kyle Chandler) has just passed away and left Lee in charge of his teenage son Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Lee returns to his hometown, where a tragic story still haunts him, and ghosts such as his ex-wife Randi (Michelle Williams) serve as constant reminders of his trauma. It’s a story of family, of trauma and little hope.
The film, so far, has won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Casey Affleck), the BAFTA Award for Best Leading Actor (Casey Affleck) and Best Original Screenplay (Kenneth Lonergan), the AACTA International Awards for Best Screenplay and Best Lead Actor (Casey Affleck), to name a few.
In addition to Best Picture, Manchester By The Sea is vying for five other Academy Awards – Lead Actor (Casey Affleck), Supporting Actor (Lucas Hedges), Supporting Actress (Michelle Williams), Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
Much of the film’s success has been shadowed by the multiple sexual assault allegations from Affleck’s history. Though the claims were reportedly settled outside the court and Affleck has denied the allegations, many have still condemned the Academy for including Affleck this year.
