Best Picture: Lion

Lion is the heart-wrenching story of a 5-year-old Indian boy who gets lost on the streets of Calcutta and, eventually, adopted and raised by an Australian family. 25 years later, he searches for his lost family, setting out to find his home. The film, adapted from the book “Long Way Home” was written by Saroo Brierley and Luke Davies, was directed by Garth Davis and stars Dev Patel, Sunny Pawar, Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara.

Lion scored an 86 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and earned $36,378,483 in the box office, according to the site. It has won six major film awards already this season: BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Dev Patel), BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, AACTA International Award for Best Supporting Actress (Nicole Kidman), AACTA International Award for Best Supporting Actor (Dev Patel), Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing – First-Time Feature Film (Garth Davis), and American Society of Cinematographers Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Theatrical Releases (Greig Fraser).

In addition to Best Picture, Lion is up for 5 other Academy Awards – Supporting Actor (Dev Patel), Supporting Actress (Nicole Kidman), Cinematography, Original Score and Best Adapted Screenplay.
