Best Picture: La La Land

Charming and whimsical musical La La Land is a story centered around two Los Angeles, starry eyed artists, aspiring actress Mia (Emma Stone) and jazz musician Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), who fall in love while struggling to make it in a hopeful city known for dreamers. The film, reminiscent of Singin’ In The Rain, took home 6 Golden Globe Awards, 7 Critics’ Choice Awards, 5 BAFTA Awards – just to name a few.

And now, the film is nominated for a nearly record-breaking 14 Academy Awards, tying with Titanic and All About Eve for most nominations for a single movie. In addition to Best Picture, the film is hoping for Lead Actor (Ryan Gosling), Lead Actress (Emma Stone), Cinematography, Costume Design, Best Director, Film Editing, Original Score, Original Song (“Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” and “City of Stars”), Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Original Screenplay.

The film scored a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, and was written and directed by Damien Chazelle, who wrote and directed the Academy Award nominated Whiplash in 2014. Gosling and Stone, both up for Lead Actor and Actress awards respectively, have previously starred in two other movies together – Crazy, Stupid, Love and Gangster Squad – and are surely becoming our favorite on-screen duo and off-screen best friends.
