Best Picture: Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures is based on the true, untold stories of the brilliant black women who worked at NASA and were the brains behind astronaut John Glenn’s orbit into space, regarded as one of the greatest operations in history. Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) crossed both gender and racial lines, and became beacons of inspiration for the black community and girls of all color who aspired to work in STEM fields.

Rotten Tomatoes scored the film at 92 percent, and notes $142,591,830 made at the box office.

The film has won 6 major screen awards already this season, including the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, the NAACP Image Award winners for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture, the Satellite Award for Best Cast in a Motion Picture, the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Motion Picture, the NAACP Image Award winners for Outstanding Literary Work (Nonfiction) and the ADG Excellence in Production Design Awards (Period Film).

Hidden Figures is nominated for two other Academy Awards in addition to Best Picture – Octavia Spencer for Supporting Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Notably, Spencer is one of three black women up for Best Supporting Actress – the first time in the Academy’s history that three black women have been up for the award.
