Best Picture: Hell or High Water

Southern drama Hell or High Water tells the story of Texan brothers Toby (Chris Pine) and Tanner (Ben Foster) coming back together after years apart to rob a chain of banks threatening to foreclose on their family’s land. Their grand schemes are successful – until Marcus (Jeff Bridges) and Alberto (Gil Birmingham) put the brothers on their radar for one last pursuit – leading to one final showdown.

The film, directed by David Mackenzie and written by Taylor Sheridan, earned a 98 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, and was praised by critics as a great Western and one of the year’s best films.

So far this season, Hell or High Water  has raked in one major award, with Jeff Bridges took home the Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. On top of Best Picture, it’s also nominated for Supporting Actor (Jeff Bridges), Film Editing and Original Screenplay.

With 17 directorial credits to his name, this is Mackenzie’s first Academy Award nomination. Bridges has one Academy Award (Lead Actor) under his belt in 2010 for Crazy Heart.
