Best Picture: Fences

Based off of the Pulitzer Prize winning play of the same name, Fences is the story of a black father named Troy Maxson, played by star and director Denzel Washington, who is working to raise his family in 1950’s Pittsburgh. Washington and co-star Viola Davis, both of whom starred in the 2010 stage revival (and won Tonys for their portrayals), came back together for the big screen adaptation – which has earned rave reviews and a 93 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Stephen Henderson, Jovan Adepo, Russell Hornsby, and Mykelti Williamson also joined the film’s cast.

Fences has already brought home a stellar 7 awards thus far this awards season. Viola Davis took home the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Supporting Actress, the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role, the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. The film is also nominated for 3 other awards in addition to Best Picture – Denzel Washington for Lead Actor; Viola Davis for Supporting Actress; and Best Adapted Screenplay.
