Best Picture: Arrival

Sci-fi best picture nominee Arrival is the story of Louise Banks, played by Amy Adams, a linguistics professor tasked with interpreting the language of alien visitors on twelve spacecrafts that have mysteriously landed around Earth. The film, directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Eric Heisserer and Ted Chiang, stars Adams, Forest Whitaker and Jeremy Renner, and earned rave reviews and a 94 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, it earned $99,907,270 in the box office.

Canadian director Villeneuve’s first nomination came at the 2011 83rd annual award ceremony, with his French drama Incendies, a foreign language nominee that year (and lost to Swedish film In a Better World). Adams has previously been nominated for 5 Academy Awards; Renner for 2; and Whitaker has won 1 in 2007 for The Last King of Scotland.

So far this awards season, Arrival has racked up a number of titles – the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie, Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, the BAFTA Award for Best Sound and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

In addition to Best Picture, Arrival is also nominated for Cinematography, Directing, Film Editing, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Writing (Adapted Screenplay).
