Face it – movies just aren’t nearly the same cinematic experience without the music that accompanies it. To this day, old scores by Thomas Newman, Hans Zimmer and John Williams are the soundtrack to many of my days, whatever it is I’m doing.

This year, the music was strong in so many films. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who took the world by storm with his hit Broadway musical Hamilton and has become a name we’ll never forget, gave us Disney music like our young hearts craved with Moana, especially “How Far I’ll Go.” Justin Hurwitz, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are responsible for our touch of nostalgia this year, bringing us all back to classic, old musicals with new charm in La La Land. And, of course, none of us can resist dancing to Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop The Feeling” from Trolls.

We ached and moved with Jackie, with Moonlight, Lion and even Passengers. And that was all thanks to the musical masters behind the screen – each of whom deserves recognition for their work this year.
