The nominees for this year’s Actor in A Leading Role category:
- Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea
- Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge
- Ryan Gosling, La La Land
- Viggo Mortensen, Captain Fantastic
- Denzel Washington, Fences
Four of the five actors star in films also up for Best Picture, and one is an Academy Award winning veteran – Washington won in 1990 for his role in Glory and in 2002 for Training Day,
Last year, the award went to Leonardo Dicaprio for his starring role in The Revenant. It was notably Dicaprio’s first Academy win, though far from his first nomination – he had been nominated five times before his historic win last year.
The win could easily go to any of the nominees this year. Gosling has earned accolades for his classic, Gene Kelly-esque performance in La La Land. Garfield’s role in Hacksaw Ridge was a mature and inspiring step for the former webbed superhero. Denzel Washington’s role in Fences was complex and honest, all on the line. Casey Affleck’s role in Manchester By The Sea was both haunting and heart-breaking, and Viggo Mortensen’s role in Captain Fantastic was a far, new cry from Aragorn, King of Gondor.
