America loves its athletes. They’re team players who are used to hard work and travel. Here are 25 we’d love to run for president or any political office.

Athletes have a good history of running for office in America. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Heath Shuler, Jack Kemp and Bill Bradley are some of the more famous examples.

Yes, athletes have some negative stereotypes. But there’s also the positive. Athletes learn about hard work, cooperation and determination. And sports gives people incredible confidence. What do athletes have going for them that makes them successful in politics? They possess name recognition, popularity, competitive spirit, and usually enough money (or at least the ability to bring in mad donations) to run and win. And the good ones respect fair play.

Being a hard hitter is also important in politics. It’s a good place to have a strong personality, because you need to stand up to your opponents on a daily basis. That’s something that’s common on the hill and in this list of athletes. Public office is not for the weak of heart. It takes the same determination and force of will an athlete needs for professional sports. And occasional yelling.

You may love your current job of coaching or working as a broadcaster or entrepreneur. And I’m not saying just anyone can be a great coach or sports analyst. It’s just that America needs you more.

So welcome to the political draft! Read on for a list of 25 athletes who this country needs to run for office.
