Not every Best Picture winner really deserves to take home that coveted Academy Award. Here are our picks for the five worst winners of all time.
Academy Awards season is upon us. This means that it’s time to discuss the best films and individual performances from the past year. We all have favorites, and specific movies speak to different people in different ways. So no matter what film walks away with the coveted Best Picture Oscar, someone will likely be unhappy. That’s just a face of life with any awards program.
We all know that every year at Oscar time, there’s a generally accepted public theory of who will win. Conventional wisdom leans toward musical La La Land. However there are a few other films that some critics see as potential spoilers. La La Land might not win, and a movie like Hidden Figures or Hell or High Water could. However, if that happens, there likely won’t be a revolt about it. All the nominees this year are strong films. Plus, there’s no real overwhelming favorite. La La Land is probably the closest thing to a consensus pick.
However, that’s not always the case.
Sometimes, a film wins Best Picture and it’s just wrong. Everyone knows, pretty much immediately that it probably shouldn’t have won. Whether that was because of the film itself or because it edged out a more deserving opponent, there are several Best Picture winners who are anything but.
