New “Last Jedi” Spoiler Plays on The Vagaries of the English Language

A new spoilery hint out of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” reminds us that the English language can hide clues in plain sight.

When it was revealed that the title to Star Wars: Episode VIII was “The Last Jedi” the speculation ran rampant. Who was this “Last Jedi”? Were they really the last? If the Force just woke up, wouldn’t it be bringing more Jedi on down the line? Or did it only wake in one person?

And who was this “Last Jedi” anyway? Was it Rey? Was it Finn? Was it Kylo Ren? Was it Luke, and all these new kids were (expletive) out of luck?

Or did Jedi mean more than just one person. After all, in English anyway, the plural of Jedi is….Jedi. And though we sort of assume that in a galaxy far, far away, they probably don’t speak English per se, the speak it just fine (and with British accents!) in the movies.

But since Disney’s retcon of all thing EU for Star Wars, for all we knew, they had retconned that too and the plural of Jedi was actually Jedis now. No one could be sure. That is, until today.

Yes, that’s in Italian. And because Italian is not nearly as obnoxiously imprecise as English, their translation of “Gli ultimi Jedi” back into ours reveals that in fact the title The Last Jedi is actually “The Last of the Jedi.”

Yup, that’s plural alright. So we can cease speculation that Rey is somehow “the last Jedi,” or that she’s not and it’s actually Kylo, or it’s none of those kids, and it’s actually Luke. Instead we’re meeting up with those who are today “The Last of the Jedi”…and hoping that they are ready to pass on their teaching to the next generation.
