Archie and his trusty gang of pals aren’t going anywhere. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. TV and Archie Comics have struck a deal.
After the booming success of Archie and his pals on Riverdale, it’s not exactly a surprise – but joyous news, nonetheless.
The storylines and characters that result from the deal could feature more than just the Riverdale crew we’ve already come to love. According to The Hollywood Reporter‘s report, we’ll have the chance to expand on the Archie universe.
Archie CEO Jon Goldwater told THR that the deal “extends beyond the traditional Riverdale crew of Archie, Betty and Veronica” and could include such other characters as Katy Keene, “America’s Queen of Pin-Ups and Fashions” and even, perhaps, some superheroes from the Dark Circle crew.
Series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told The Hollywood Reporter early last month of his hopes for a whole Archie world – and the pitches that came before Riverdale came to fruition, including movie pitches. He told THR that he and director friend Jason Moore had this movie Archie idea, inspired by The Perks of Being A Wallflower – and it wasn’t exactly a flop of an idea, either.
"“A lot of the studios really loved the pitch, really loved the characters, but they didn’t know exactly how to make and market a coming-of-age movie,” he recalled."
After the long process of settling on the idea of a TV show, the rest, as they say, was history. The deal with Warner Bros. is reflective of their deal with DC Comics, and the superhero phenomenon on the channel today, including The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow, to name just a few.
As for myself, well – if Veronica and Betty had their own spin-off of being gal-pals who take down the patriarchy from high school to college and beyond, who am I to complain? (Goldwater, come talk to me, I have plenty of ideas.) Or maybe, with reboots being “the thing” these days, we could see a new revamping of Sabrina Spellman, everyone’s favorite teenage witch? On the CW, a little darker…come on, we can see it, right?
