Matt Murdock and Elektra Natchios

Daredevil and Elektra are one of the most well-known romances in Marvel comics. And Daredevil the TV show does right by their relationship. It’s messy and complicated, and both parties end up questioning who they are and what they want. From themselves, from each other, from their roles in the world at large. Their story is fascinating because it’s not just about whether or not they belong together romantically. It’s about who they are as people, as well as how they see the world and their roles in it.

Daredevil Season 2 shows us the story of Matt and Elektra’s courtship via flashbacks. And it turns out that Elektra has always been the key relationship of Matt’s life. She’s dangerous, a bit mischievous and manages to make Matt seem like an actual fun, chill person to be around. The flipped trope that it’s Elektra who likes fast cars and petty crime is an interesting one. She’s a terrible influence. And maybe not a very good person. But she never apologizes for who she is, and that’s pretty interesting to watch.

Matt, for his part, has shown over the course of Daredevil that he’s a pretty terrible boyfriend. He was part of different relationships over the course of the show’s first two seasons. And he’s basically ruined all three of them, in one way or another. In short: Wilson Fisk is probably a better bet in the romance department than Matt is. But something about his romance with Elektra is incredibly appealing. Their relationship is confusing and complicated. Matt frequently judges her for behavior he himself indulges in, Elektra commits violent acts because she thinks that’s all she’s good for. But they still relate to each other on a level that almost no other duo on the show does. So let’s hope these two crazy kids work it out once the evil Hand finishes bringing Elektra back from the dead.
