The New Books Roundup, Feb. 14: Logan, A Debut, and a Sequel
This week’s set of new releases doesn’t have any explicit romances, but it does have the Wolverine, a first novel, and a sequel that has us intrigued.
In case you may not have noticed, today is, in fact, Valentine’s Day. Now, it seems to us that the easy way for our weekly roundup of some new books would be to pick out a few romances to reflect the holiday. However, sometimes a romance just won’t do. Sometimes, what you need is something a little less romantic.
That doesn’t mean that some of the following entries don’t have elements of romance in them, but none of them immediately classify as romances. Title links take you to none other than Amazon, and we’ve paraphrased the descriptions from there; Goodreads links take you to where else but Goodreads and that ever-growing to-read shelf.
Wolverine: Old Man Logan
Does anyone else think there’s a reason behind the timing of this release? Like, say, an upcoming movie that also happens to borrow from this series? You know, the one coming out on March 3 that has Hugh Jackman in it? Right, we’re sure that has nothing to do with this. Anyway, Old Man Logan, written by Mark Millar and illustrated by Steve McNiven, takes us to a time where Logan has hung up his claws as much as he can, considering that they’re literally part of his body. However, the world won’t let him be, and it means it’s time to head out with Hawkeye, who probably won’t show up in the movie because of very long, complex reasons. This appears to be a re-release in hardcover format. Goodreads gives it a 4.26 rating. Marvel Comics; hardcover, 224 pages; list price: $34.99.
Gilded Cage
Vic James’ first novel, Gilded Cage name-checks Victoria Aveyard in its description, and it’s not hard to see why. In an alternative England, you have the Equals, who are decidedly not equal with the rest of the population, and those who don’t have their powers with magic must serve them. (At least there are no Silver Bloods or Red Bloods hanging around.) One of our seeming protagonists will start thinking about rising up; one will discover some romantic feelings; and one will seek to remake the world from the inside out. Goodreads currently has it at a solid 3.97 rating. Del Rey; hardcover, 368 pages; list price: $20.00.
Winter of the Gods
Finally, we come to our sequel. Jordanna Max Brodsky has returned to the world of The Immortals for this second novel, Winter of the Gods. Selene DiSilva is back in action, this time because of a body found on Wall Street. As Artemis, she’ll have to use all of her unearthly abilities to pursue those who would pursue her and the rest of the gods. Since the title implies that winter has arrived, we suspect this one won’t end happily at all. Goodreads currently gives this book a 3.75. Orbit; hardcover, 480 pages; list price: $26.00.
Other new books out today include George Saunders’ Lincoln in the Bardo and a collection of poetry from Amanda Lovelace, the princess saves herself in this one.
