Stranger Things May Stick Around for Four or Five Seasons

According to new reports, Stranger Things could extend past a second season as the Duffer Brothers plant seeds for as many as five seasons.

After an explosive first season, Stranger Things returns this Halloween for its follow-up season. Obviously, the premiere season laid the groundwork for an expansive narrative that, with proper execution, could stretch across several seasons. And of course, several dimensions.

While season 1 served to introduce us to new characters like Eleven, it left us with very few answers. Naturally, we expect season 2 to answer some of our questions. But like any good show, we can expect Stranger Things to leave us wanting more. More importantly, for every question answered, expect another question to arise. That’s how these things go.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the Duffer Brothers definitely have a five-year game plan. In today’s television landscape, that’s about as long a lifespan as anyone gets. “Everything changes as we move forward so we’ll see,” co-creator Ross Duffer explained. And when Ross sees forward, he’s talking several seasons in the future. “Hopefully you’ll come to the end of season 2 and feel fully satisfied and want more but you’ll feel like it has come to a conclusion. But also we’ve laid the ground work for further seasons.”

In addition to an abbreviated four or five season lifespan, a lot of shows like to “cancel” themselves. So Matt Duffer said he’d rather stop the show with “a finite ending.” Though with a show like Stranger Things, “finite” seems more like wishful thinking. “I don’t want it to be one of those shows that runs out of gas and they lose it because they’re losing interest. You wanna end when you’re on top,” he said.

And while we speculate about how many Stranger Things seasons we’re going to get, there’s always the new set photos that take us back to Hawkins before the premiere. They’re in order from most epic “what the sh*t” face to the classic “this again?” expression.
