Was James Corden funny at the 2017 Grammys? There are few things to look at to know for sure.
James Corden’s opening for the Grammys was a so-called “cold open” that featured the elevator malfunctioning, him falling down an open shaft, and — at one point — even losing a shoe to reveal little pink socks.

It wasn’t exactly high comedy, but it worked well, and as the video shows, the audience responded positively to his efforts.
He then took to going into a Grammys rap, which was actually kind of cute, given that it was done by a fat white British comedian rather than, say, Phife Dawg (R.I.P.). Still, he talked about everything from Sturgill Simpson’s nomination (and no, we still don’t know who he is, either) to Drake and Rihanna dating (which got Rihanna started with the drinking from her flask that continued for the rest of the night).
And the audience ate it up wholesale.

James Corden told The Los Angeles Times that he knows that people don’t tune into the Grammys to hear him sing, which is why he planned to keep his opening monologue light-hearted. He also, it seems, took the same approach to hosting: when a host chews up the scenery, he or she fails. But James Corden chose to be subtle with his humor — he was playful with the nominees, he was gentle with the audience, and he seemed to have a real blast just being there.
