Thelma & Louise
While I am still having a hard time forgiving Susan “I-don’t-vote-with-my-vagina!” Sarandon for the things she said during this election, I would be a FOOL not to include this quintessential lady-powered romp. We follow Geena Davis’s Thelma and Sarandon’s Louise as they head out on a road trip to escape their dull lives (and kind of Thelma’s garbage husband) and, because two badass queens are involved, things almost immediately get rough. The women, after a night of drinking, get into a scuffle with a dude who won’t leave them alone and by “scuffle” I mean “straight up murder” and by “won’t leave them alone” I mean “he brutally assaults Thelma.” With a gun Thelma had stashed in her trunk, Louise kills the bastard point-blank, and thus begins their journey not as casual roadtrippers but as semi-empowered convicts who engage in a series of ill-advised and immoral acts…but at least they do it TOGETHER!!!
This movie is a pretty rare female-driven action flick, especially considering it was made in 1991 when female characters were basically all still secretaries, wives, or sad single gals who simply HAD to find their Mr. Right! It’s fierce, it deals with fairly socially political issues while still allowing the narrative to drive (PUN INTENDED THANK YOU) us forward in an entertaining way, and we get lots of very great Davis and Sarandon outfits SLASH friendship goals moments.
Best lady moment: I really shouldn’t even have to say this, but the LITERAL CLIFF-HANGER of an ending is iconic. Also, the moment directly before their final adventure? **kiss winky emoji** **tongue out emoji** **two girls in bunny ears and leotards emoji**
