Alec Baldwin broke his own record tonight for times hosting Saturday Night Live and just like always, it was quite the exciting episode.
With Saturday Night Live, there are some great hosts that come back time and time again because we love them. And Alec Baldwin is definitely one of those hosts. This year we’ve been pretty lucky with our Baldwin coverage on the show but there is nothing better than seeing Alec back where he belongs. When joined with Ed Sheeran, there was no doubt in our minds about how great this show was going to be.
Cold Open
Melissa McCarthy is back as Sean Spicer (probably very much against the wills of the White House). And Sean is having some problems with the names of the Prime Minister of Japan and his wife.
It only got better. Spicer brings back his dollies and explains that Moana is going to jail because of her emails. Sean even does a QVC sale on Ivanka Trump’s shoes and bangles. Just to drive the knife in further with the White House, Kate McKinnon comes out as Jeff Sessions.
Don’t worry though. If you thought that Spicer wouldn’t run his podium into people, this time, he has a scooter podium and chased everyone.
Opening Monologue
Pete Davidson realized that Alec Baldwin used to be super attractive. That’s pretty much the entire monologue. Pete just comes out and they show old clips and he makes fun of how old Alec Baldwin has gotten.
While it sounds like it wouldn’t be funny, it was actually pretty good. Just the two of them and not much else. It was simple and that sometimes is funnier than anything else.
Russell Stover
February isn’t just about Valentine’s Day! It’s also Black History Month and now you can buy a box of chocolates for Black History Month to give to your lover. Honestly, this one could have ended up pretty terribly.
But it worked pretty well. Mainly because Sasheer Zamata and Leslie Jones sold the reactions to make each of the couples work.
Cheetos Commercial Pitch
Did you watch the Super Bowl? Did some of the commercials really get you? Well, now Cheetos wants in on the heartbreaking commercials that we seemed to get a lot of. Or at least, that’s what this sketch was showing us.
It was pretty funny. Just Baldwin and Aidy Bryant pitching dramatic ideas that had nothing to do with Cheetos.
State of the Union with Jake Tapper
If you haven’t seen Fatal Attraction, it’s okay! Just watch this sketch and then you’ll have strange feelings about Jake Tapper and Kellyanne Conway. No really, it leaves you feeling so weird about the two of them and I’m 99% sure someone wrote fanfiction about Jake and Kellyanne after that.
Basically Jake decides to not have Kellyanne on his show because she lies. So Jake goes home and thinks that he is going to enjoy his night. Until Kellyanne is in his apartment and confronts him. She says she wants to be on the news, and basically it is them going back and forth about why she can’t be on the show until Kellyanne falls out a window.
It is weird as it sounds, but really quite funny.
Army Training
Larson is a new recruit and his father is the sergeant. Baldwin (Larson’s father) comes in and the whole sketch is just him being super sweet to his son. There wasn’t really anything to this other than just a man who loved his son who happened to be in the army.
But it was fun. Just normal dad stuff wanting the best for their kid. It just so happens that he is a sergeant and screams at the rest of the recruits.
Ed Sheeran
If you’ve never gone to an Ed Sheeran concert, I highly recommend you do. But since those are hard to get to, this Saturday Night Live performance will do for now. Ed performed his news song and it was just as great as his other albums. “Shape of You” is the first song he sang and it is calling back to Sheeran’s first album feel.
Next, Sheeran sang “Castle on the Hill” from the two new singles. For those who don’t know, Ed had vanished really for about a year and a lot of his fans had wanted new music. So on the day we thought we’d just get “Shape of You” we got this song as well. And they’re both amazing and show why Ed Sheeran is as big as he is.
Weekend Update
Proving that Kate McKinnon can play everyone in Washington, this Weekend Update has her as Senator Elizabeth Warren. Weekend Update happened just as usual. Mainly Trump jokes, some random news bits and jokes from Colin and Che and then a really weird BDSM bit with Mikey Day and Leslie Jones.
Other than that, it wasn’t really anything too crazy. Just the normal jokes and “Guy Who Just Bought a Boat” giving you relationship advice. Other than that, it was pretty tame for Weekend Update.
People’s Court
We wanted to know when we’d get Alec as Trump and we got it in the best possible way. He takes the federal judges who denied his travel ban to The People’s Court. The judge didn’t understand why it was happening and Trump definitely thought he had more control than he did.
Vladimir Putin comes to tell them about why Trump’s ban should be legal and Steve Bannon as a skeleton is in the background of the courtroom during the speech and really, we wanted a Trump sketch and we got probably one of the best.
Beyonce’s Twins
The doctor who gets to deliver Beyonce’s twins is extremely special but you know who is more important? Beyonce’s twins. And her twins just happen to be Kenan Thompson and Tracy Morgan. The sketch was honestly pretty dumb and lame but seeing Tracy Morgan always makes up for pretty bad sketches.
This one just needed a bit more context to make it great.
Leslie Wants to Play Trump
The Kyle Mooney and Leslie Jones love story might be on hold because Leslie is too busy pretending to be Donald Trump with Melania. Basically Leslie wants to play Trump if Alec doesn’t come back and Lorne Michaels tells her no and fires her for flipping out.
It is pretty funny and does bring up the question about what will happen with Baldwin and Trump if he decides to not come back next year?
Gym Record
Honestly this was just dumb. There is no other way to describe it. A boy is trying to do sit ups and beat the record and he farts a lot. That’s the whole joke. But it was a quick sketch to end the show. I just wish it ended on a higher note.
While the episode was great on its own, the best part was the emotional hug between Tracy Morgan and Alec Baldwin at the end of the episode.
