The Best

1. Jane Zhang. Seirously. This was, hands down, the most gorgeous gown that turned up all night on the carpet. I was really impressed. Most people have never heard of the Chinese pop singer before tonight. This is how to break into the public consciousness right.

2. Camila Cabello looking hell glad to finally not to be wearing outfit three of five in the matching line up. Honestly, I was really surprised that she wound up in the top. I think it helped that the rest of Fifth Harmony didn’t even show up. (Are they Fourth Harmony now, by the way?)

3. Gary Clark Jr. and Nicole Trunfio, as couple of the evening. She is demonstrating how to wear Zuhair Murad properly. (And Faith Hill, she can probably pronounce his name as well.)

4. Kimberly Schlapman, of Little Big Town, being country without being obvious. There are lots of country stars who feel like they must dress “country” as if we might not know they were country otherwise. It’s good to see someone who has the confidence to know she doesn’t need the signalling.

5. On the flip side of the coin, Karen Fairchild, also of Little Big Town, being obvious without being country. Look, that dress isn’t necessarily country. On another artist, it could read hippie. But because she is country, that’s how it reads. Again, the self confidence to know she needs no signaling.

6. Laverne Cox, dressing to impress Beyonce, and succeeding in impressing everyone else. She’s wearing Bryan Hearns, for the record, an offbeat designer, and one i hope gets more recognition.

7. Solange Knowles did not deign to tell anyone who she was wearing. She didn’t have to. She is Solange. On anyone else, tinfoil and fans from an art deco era would be a failure of monumental proportions. On Solange, it is merely Solange.

8. Margaret Cho looking divine. Margaret Cho is not usually one to kill it on the red carpet like this, so, this is a big moment, both for gold lame suits, and for the actress/comedian personally.

9. Trace Lysette, killing the blue suit in the women’s category. Many men wore blue tuxes on the red carpet too, it was by far and away the most popular color. (2chains took it in the men’s division, for the record.)

10. Charli XCX in a Jessica Rabbit Special. Jessica Rabbit is a hard, hard look to pull off, but the  Vivienne Westwood gown really flatters her, without being either grotesque or cartoon.

Honorable Mention: Pentatonix. Most groups feel the need to dress in some sort of matching outfits. Fourth Harmony might want to take notes. This is how you all match without ever looking matchy-matchy.
