The Black Parade, My Chemical Romance

Concept albums are rarely recognized by the Grammys, in spite of their stellar artistry. Bowie’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars didn’t seem to be on their radar. Pink Floyd’s The Wall received a nomination but not an award. The Who’s Tommy finally made it into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 but never won any awards. And My Chemical Romance’s The Black Parade? Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

Okay, technically speaking, MCR did receive a nomination for their legendary emo album, but it wasn’t until 2008 and it was nominated for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition package. And it didn’t even win. It lost to — get this — What It Is!: Funky Soul and Rare Grooves (1967-1977). While that may be great news for the people behind What It Is!, it’s bad news for all of the former emo kids who were rooting for Gerard, Mikey, Frank, Ray, and Bob. Sadly, the special 10th-anniversary reissue released in September 2016 wasn’t considered for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition.

If The Black Parade had been nominated, it would have gone up against Daughtry’s self-titled album, John Fogerty’s Revival, Springsteen’s Magic, and Wilco’s Blue Sky, ultimately losing to Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace from Foo Fighters.
