Snoop Dogg

The Best Rap Performance category was added to the Grammys in 1989. Snoop Dogg’s debut studio album, Doggystyle was released in 1993. And yet here we are over 20 years later, and Snoop has yet to receive a Grammy award. Oh sure, he’s been nominated. In fact, he’s been nominated a record 17 times! But he’s never won. It’s a total shame.

It’s not like he hasn’t created any Grammy-worthy material. Doggystyle debuted in the top spot of the Billboard 200 and sold over 800,000 copies in its first week. He’s collaborated with everyone from Kendrick Lamar to Katy Perry, Willie Nelson to Tupac Shakur. Some of those collaborations were among his nominations, like Best Pop Collaboration for “California Gurls” with Katy Perry and “I Wanna Love You” with Akon for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. In 2014, he crossed over to the reggae category with Reincarnated, released under his Snoop Lion pseudonym, which was nominated for Best Reggae Album. Still no award.

Fortunately, Snoop Dogg isn’t one to measure his success by the number of trophies or statuettes sitting on his shelf. He doesn’t even seem to be too concerned with chart positions or sales numbers either. Like any real artist, Snoop Dogg does it because he enjoys it. Grammy schmammy! Besides, he’s got other things to keep him busy, like his youth football league and his TV show with his good friend, Martha Stewart.
