11 Worst Grammy Snubs of All Time
By April Jones
Tupac Shakur
The legendary Tupac Shakur is one of several rap artists who never received the Grammy recognition they deserved. (Also on that list are Nas, DMX, Run-D.M.C. and Public Enemy.) The entire Rap category is frequently filled with WTF? moments, like the time Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” beat Jay-Z, Kanye, Drake, and A$AP Rocky. Or any time Iggy Azalea was nominated.
But it’s a real shame that Tupac received seven Grammy nominations and didn’t win any of them. Two of his albums, Me Against the World and All Eyez on Me, were nominated for Best Rap Album, in 1996 and 1997 respectively. His hit single “California Love”, a collaboration with Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman, was nominated posthumously for two awards. His last nomination, Best Rap Solo for “Changes”, came four years after his death.
Although Tupac has since been given a spot in the Grammy museum, it doesn’t make up for the fact that “Gangsta’s Paradise” won over “Dear Mama” for Best Rap Solo. No offense to Coolio, but seriously?
Even though it’s been over 20 years since Shakur’s death, there’s always a chance that he could get that coveted statuette. If his hologram can appear at Coachella, maybe some unearthed recording can end up on another song or album somewhere.
