I’ll never forget the first time I watched Tarzan because it was the first time I heard Phil Collins’ voice. This, of course, then led to my discovery of one of the best drum breaks of all time in “In the Air Tonight”. While everyone was talking about skateboarding on vines in the jungle, I was slamming pencils on the desk emulating Phil Collins’ debut album as best as I could.
But intense drum playing can be dangerous. Just ask Phil, who underwent restorative surgery for a dislocated vertebra in his neck from his Genesis tour in 2007. It was so bad that it caused nerve damage in his hand and he couldn’t play the drums anymore. Luckily, a very smart doctor told him that he could play again if he just practiced. But will New Phil ever be able to match the iconic music of Old Phil.
Old Phil Collins, every in remastered versions, is the best Phil Collins. Probably because Phil Collins does a lot with the remasters: “I’m easily flattered. If people rediscover the old stuff and show interest, it would be silly to not make more music.”
So, people like me who only learned about Phil Collins because of Tarzan, no worries. That’s kind of the point. It’s why famous artists do that.
