Castlevania is Coming to Netflix as a TV Show
Get your Vampire Killer whips ready to go, because it appears that Netflix will release a Castlevania series sometime this year.
Netflix has proven that it can do some seriously dark action adaptations in the past few years. One need not look further than Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. (We’ll know if Iron Fist continues the trend in March.) Apparently, the streaming service’s current track record was enough for Konami, because the Castlevania series will come to Netflix sometime this year, according to io9.
For those unfamiliar with the series, it’s about vampires and the people who hunt them, mostly. Dracula shows up a lot, and you generally play as people who want to kill Dracula — specifically, members of the Belmont family. (Yes, there are more Belmonts than just Simon, even though he gets a special quest of his own.) In some games, you even play as Dracula’s son.
io9 reports that at this time, all they know is that Netflix has announced the series. The report speculates that Adi Shankar is working on the project. They cite both a Facebook post and a statement made last year. The post reads, in part, “It’s going to be dark, satirical, and after a decade of propaganda it will flip the vampire sub-genre on its head.”
Dark sounds very Castlevania, and since most vampires these days are the love interests, returning them to their villainous roots might actually come off as refreshing. Here’s the question: will the series focus on a character already introduced in the games? (If so, will it be Alucard?) Or will it feature a brand-new Belmont?

Right now, we just don’t know. io9’s report based on a press release suggests we’ll see the first part of the first season sometime this year. Since Halloween’s been snapped up by the second season of Stranger Things, might we suggest a summer release date for Castlevania?
