A Recap of the Hardest Spells To Cast in the Wizarding World

The wand may choose the wizard, but it’s up to the wizard to make it work. We’re taking a look at some of the most difficult spells to cast in the wizarding world.

There are some spells that exist in the wizarding world that take much more than a swish and flick to cast. Some have to come from a place of great love and friendship, while others are rooted in pure evil. Pottermore directed our attention to some spells that require the most attention, practice, and skill to truly master. Though none of us can really hold a candle to these two.

Apparition

This one can get tricky due to the high risk of having a body part left behind after it’s cast. It’s what’s known as splinching, and it can prove to yield nasty results as Ron Weasley will tell you. This skill is only to be trusted to adult wizards. Those over 17 have to pass a test and get a license from the Department of Magical Transportation in order to apperate. It’s very useful, but professors recommend to keep a clear mind before apperating. Scattered thoughts could lead to other scattered things that may or may not be attached to you.

Expecto Patronum

It’s the ultimate wizard shield coming from a place of pure joy and happiness. A Patronus is a magical embodiment of positive energy, and will manifest as a silver spirit animal from the caster’s wand. Harry Potter is said to be among the youngest wizards to ever cast such a spell, as it’s not easy to control a spell and one’s emotions at the same time. Casting it requires a ton of concentration, something only wizards who are most in tune with their emotions can achieve.

Occlumency

How do you stop someone from invading your thoughts? This is the counterspell to a Legilimens spell, which allows the caster to skip about in their target’s mind. Occlumency involves shutting off all thought and feeling as to throw a steel curtain between the Legilimens and their target. This is actually a very zen-like ability when you think about it. Clearing the mind of all thought can be a tough order for some, especially if you have feelings ready to burst through the surface at any moment.

Making a Horcrux

The thought of splitting your soul into pieces is monstrous in its own right. We’re not saying this is a spell we recommend using anytime soon, but it’s still difficult none the less. Even J.K. Rowling herself has said the process of creating a Horcrux is widely unknown, though it’s too horrible to say aloud. But what we do know is that binding a piece of one’s soul to a magical object does have to contain a crucial and devastating act – murder. Avada Kedavra is already an unforgivable curse, so imagine all the layers of terrible it takes in order to create a Horcrux. Totally not worth it.

As for what would qualify as an easy spell? Probably Wingardium Leviosa. It can’t be that difficult if it’s one of the first spells being taught at Hogwarts. And Alohomora seems like it would be pretty simple to cast as well. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
