20 Self Care Tips for Warriors of the Resistance
Spring clean your social media
There are plenty of reasons that we all love social media – friendship, connection with old high school friends and distant family members, baby photos, engagement announcements and, of course, good memes and trends. But lately, social media has also been more exhausting than ever. Trolls seem to spring up faster than ever, and nowadays, they’re the lesser evil when compared to politically defensive (and offensive) friends and family members. My mother and I have found ourselves arguing with, muting and unfriending people we otherwise were close with in the past few months – and, admittedly, it can hurt.
More and more, we’ve discussed deleting some social media all together – specifically, for us, Facebook. And the more I think about it, the more I realize that might be just fine. Disconnecting for good is okay, whether it’s all apps or just one. Want to keep the app but disconnect for awhile? Deactivate for a few weeks, and come back if and when you’re ready. Want to keep the app but see less discussion? Feel no guilt about muting (besides, it’s not like they know you muted them).
But if you’re really and truly done with an app, don’t second guess yourself – we’ve lived without social media before, and it may be just the cure in this political climate.
