It’s been 20 years since the world was blessed by J.K. Rowling’s magical words, and the celebration starts with these brand new covers for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. These iconic names were introduced to the world 20 years ago this June, if you can believe it. J.K. Rowling published Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone on June 26, 1997, after she claims the idea, quote, “fell into [her] head.” Now to commemorate the momentous and life-changing novel, British publisher Bloomsbury has unveiled some brand new designs for the 20-year anniversary editions of the book.

These illustrations, created by Levi Pinfold, tell the story of each Hogwarts house, and showcase the coat of arms and animals that make each house so unique. Bloomsbury is releasing two versions of each House, one for paperback and one for hardcover copies.

Pinfold says he wanted to capture the essence of heraldry by putting what looks like a coat of arms on each cover. He says the crests and designs describe the rich history behind the Houses. For example, on the Hufflepuff cover there are beech leaves and a lamb, which represent tolerance and gentleness. And the yellow of the Hufflepuff, according to the history of heraldry, symbolizes generosity.

We are showing you just one of the designs. The other ones are similar, but have a sort of inverse color scheme going on. And underneath each crest are three words to describe each home. Gryffindor’s are Courage, Bravery, and Determination. Hufflepuff’s are dedication, patience, and loyalty. Ravenclaw’s are wit, learning and wisdom. Finally, Slytherin’s are pride, ambition, and cunning.
