Patrick Stump is the man behind The LEGO Batman Movie’s new theme song. But how does it stack up to “Everything is Awesome” from The LEGO Movie?
When Patrick Strump / Fall Out Boy’s not making new music, they’re helping along soundtracks for movies like Ghostbusters. But in the case of The LEGO Batman Movie, maybe they shouldn’t.
“Na na na na na na na na — BATMAN!”
That’s it. The world’s greatest theme song. And it came out about fifty years ago. While it originally aired with the campy Batman series starring Adam West, its popularity hinges on its beach-y spy tones and two-syllables-max collection of lyrics. And it is because of this legacy that Patrick Stump incorporated it into The LEGO Batman Movie’s theme, which overuses Patrick Stump doing Will Arnett doing Batman and underutilizes its greatest strength: nostalgia.

Of course, the guitar riffs fit perfectly with lyrics that only list all the ways Batman is the greatest. However, it’s anything but the earworm that was “Everything is Awesome”. Because even if you hated that song, you still found yourself whisper-shouting “everything is awesome!” whenever the opportunity presented itself. Just like you always preface your Batman exclamations with “na na na na na na”.
On the other hand, one of the other tracks from The LEGO Batman Movie does strike a familiar chord — “Friends are Family”. With a chorus like, “You’re my best friend, my best friend. And friends are family” over a teenage pop band, it’s a little difficult not to sing along.
The rest of the soundtrack is, in fact, pretty awesome. It includes a piano cover of “Everything is Awesome”, “(I Just) Died in Your Arms”, and a cover of “Man in the Mirror”.
