J.K. Rowling’s Morbid End to Kreacher the House Elf

Raise a glass of butterbeer in memorium. According to J.K. Rowling, Kreacher, everyone’s favorite curmudgeonly House Elf is no more. We’ll explain.

Did anyone actually like Kreacher? He faithfully served the noble House of Black for centuries, but was never quite the same after his mistress died. Though he later changed his tune when Harry gave him Regulus’ (fake) locket, there’s something to be said about first impressions. He didn’t leave the best one, thanks to those “mudblood” comments. And now we’re learning this dear old house elf has passed on into another life. Check out J.K. Rowling’s tweet to a fan question.

Oh well. There’s no details as to how he passed on, but he’s definitely gone for good. We will fondly remember his heroic charge as he led the house elves into Hogwarts for the final battle against Voldemort.

The number 666 appears elsewhere in the Potterverse. Famous alchemist Nicolas Flamel was at least 665 years of age when the Sorcerer’s Stone was brought to our attention. We assumed he passed on as soon as it was destroyed. Check out this other Tweet J.K. Rowling responded to regarding how demonic Flamel’s age is!

She’s correct. There is no mention of Flamel’s death in the books, though Rowling has confirmed he kicked the bucket, in this archived post from her old website. Although her Twitter reply here is quite sassy, at least she has the decency to blur out this Twitter user’s name, as to not spread even more ire online.

J.K. seems to be taking on the trolls these days ever since a former fan burned her books as a response to her sharp criticism of President Donald Trump. However, experts agree the best way to deal with internet trolls is…don’t feed into them. It seems we’ll be shrugging our shoulders a lot this year.
