The Face Off all-star cast is back for the second week, but for the first team elimination. Wonder who was sent home? Read on for all the details!

This week on Face Off, McKenzie Westmore challenges the all-star cast to create a look that incorporates both heaven and hell. The theme: The Devil is in the details. Let’s see which team earned their wings, and which was cast out of the studio.

The artists meet in a huge, gothic Westminster Presbyterian Church in Pasadena. Cat hopes Niko secretly set it up, because she kinda wanted McKenzie, who is ordained, to marry them on set. Niko smiles and adorably rolls his eyes.

This Week’s Challenge

McKenzie challenges the artists to look deep inside, at the angel and devil within. They have to use their own good and bad traits to inspire the makeups, and—never before seen on Face Off—they must represent the duality that exists within us all by applying both makeups to one model.

Gage and Rachael think they’re both selfish and giving, so they incorporate a parasite theme into their creature. Ben and Evan’s angel is completely selfless, and their devil devil takes advantage of it by eating the angel half. Keaghlan and Melissa want their angel to represent structure, order and selflessness, while the devil side is self-critical. Their devil will also be consuming their angel. Jasmine and Stella are kind of rudderless, and they have no concept by the time they leave the church.

Back at the Studio

Logan and Adam decide their angel is based on taking care of and protecting people and the bad side is lust. Their devil will seduce their angel and coerce her to join to the dark side .

Gage and Rachel think their good trait is creativity and their bad is self-doubt. Niko and Cat choose loyalty and jealousy. Emily and Tyler are doing compassion versus guilt. The devil side is eroding the good side away.

Jasmine and Stella are still having issues. They decide their devil is the fear of being an imposter, and their angel is courage. They do not feel comfortable with their concept, like all people with imposter syndrome.

Michael Westmore enters the studio for some mentoring time.

Cat explains their bride half will be a beauty makeup, while the devil side is going to be dark and emaciated. Michael warns them about making it too dark, because they risk losing all the nice wrinkles they sculpted. Gage and Rachael say their devil will be wearing the angel’s face and have broken-off wings. Michael notes that means they’re like 80% devil, so he suggests they work on that.

Stella and Jasmine show Michael a sketch of a devil creature. Stella explains they’re incorporating the angel with “open heart,” but I have no idea what she means. Michael points out that they’re at 90% devil, so Jasmine asks “what about wings?” Michael thinks that would be confusing, because it’s just a devil with wings on.

Keaghlan is concentrating on a halo piece, which she hopes will be worth her while. Ben and Evan’s sculpt is coming along nicely, although they seem a bit worried their interpretation is too literal.

Day 2 finds Stella and Jasmine rushed and having mold drama: it’s ruined. Stella feels like she’s totally about to give up and she’s all out of fight.

By the end of day 3, Logan and Adam are worried. Their paint job is behind, and their makeup just looks like a face sculpture glued to a torso.

Last looks are the usual chaos. I’m not sure about Gage and Rachael’s paint job. I hope that’s just the base coat. Jasmine doesn’t see and angel or a devil in her creature and she is not happy.

The Judging

The artists present their creations to the judges. I don’t get Stella and Jasmine’s. The judges don’t think the forms makes sense for the model’s body. Ve says the horns look like slugs. Ben and Evan’s twisty devil side face is horrendous, and I don’t know if I mean that in a good way. Cig and George’s paint job is a mess. Tyler and Emily’s is quite beautiful, and Glenn says the shapes on the side of the head thrill him.

Logan and Adam’s creature looks like a caveman with a face on its tummy. Glenn says there must have been a better way to apply the tummy face so it worked with the form. Keaghlan and Melissa’s ended up totally cool. The halo worked!

I don’t know what I think of Rachel and Gage. The judges think the back piece is fabulous, but the makeup is really muddy. Niko and Cat’s is gorgeous. The wings are huge! The judges admire the level of detail up close.

McKenzie announces that the best and worst looks of the night are:

  • Emily and Tyler
  • Logan and Adam
  • Ben and Evan
  • Cat and Niko
  • Stella and Jasmine

Top Looks

Spotlight Challenge: The Devil is in The Details. Ben and Evan’s look. (Photo by: Jordin Althaus/Syfy)

Ben & Evan: Their creature is artistically beautiful and Glenn comments their face sculpt and application “hearken back to the golden age of makeup effects.” The horrid devil side face is a great contrast to the angel’s serene beauty. They kept it simple, unlike last week, and it really worked.

Emily & Tyler: Their model chews scenery, but she looks great doing it. Their verdigris bronze makeup is gorgeous, and Neville calls it an exquisite visage. The judges praise the sculpt on the headpiece and the back. Glenn says the shapes on the side of the head thrill him.

Cat & Niko: OMG, the wings! Cat and Niko’s makeup shows jealousy rotting the angel away from the inside, changing her into a devil. The wings are stupendous, and Ve says the angel side is probably the most beautiful beauty makeup they’ve seen on the show. Neville comments that it’s “big, profoundly strong in regard to its silhouette, and defying the laws of physics…. I’m referring to your hair,” as he gestures at Niko’s gravity defying coif. He’s really talking about the wings, and he’s impressed they pulled it off. The judges award them with the win for their exquisite paintwork and perfectly realized wings. They really captured the spirit of the challenge.

Bottom Looks

Spotlight Challenge: The Devil is in The Details. Logan and Adam’s look. (Photo by: Jordin Althaus/Syfy)

Logan & Adam: This is not a successful makeup, because the paint work is muddy and the hair and sculpt are ridiculous. The judges like their succubus concept, but not the execution. Their sculpt is great, but the makeup is disconnected in terms of design.

Stella & Jasmine: Their concepts are stubbornness and having an open heart, which is literally an open heart sitting on the model’s chest. Glenn doesn’t think they’ve managed to complete their own concept. The forms are “meandering.” The paint job is all over the place. I am pretty sure Stella and Jasmine agree, because of their comments during the course of the episode.

Their obvious conceptual struggle plus the fact that they were also in bottom looks last week means that Stella and Jasmine are the first team to go home. Their stubbornness and open hardheartedness combined to make them unwilling to settle on a design, but too nice to solidly critique each others’ choices.

Impostor syndrome strikes again. Once you lose your confidence during these shows, it’s really tough to come back. Let’s hope no one has a crisis of faith next week!
