49. The Luxe

I’ll admit that this one’s very much a nostalgia choice on my part, but I’d love to see an American period drama that takes a nod from its British cousins across the sea and goes for fabulous costumes and absolutely ridiculous drama that also deals with a little-represented time period. Enter The Luxe, Anna Godbersen’s completed series.

Just remember that the gown on the cover of this book is absolutely massively puffy. The costuming for a show like this — and I think a show would be the way to go here, even if a natural home like The CW would have to set aside its many comic book adaptations to try and adapt this — would be absolutely bonkers. That’s a big selling point.

Anyways, the series starts with the stories of Elizabeth and Diana Holland, sisters and socialites in the changing world of New York City in 1899. Though they may have the name, they discover that the funds might be just a bit lacking, and presentation is everything.

Time for a little scandal: Elizabeth’s disappearance.

Suffice it to say that the series has plenty of scheming characters. Think of it as a period version of something like Gossip Girl, and gossip and drama reigned supreme on shows like Downton Abbey. Why couldn’t there be an American counterpart?
