32. Daughter of Smoke and Bone

At this point, it may be safe to say that these books are primarily presented in no particular order, although we’ve certainly saved some of the best for last. That doesn’t mean, though, that we can’t drop gems like this trilogy right here though.

Laini Taylor’s series, completed as of 2014, starts off with a book of the same name as the series as a whole, refers to Prague and Marrakech just for that book (and the more dramatic locations you can have, the better, right?), and also promises an epic love story that’s also star-crossed. Our heroine is Karou, who despite living in a world in which Prague and Marrakech both exist, has blue hair and also was raised by four chimaera. Now in her teens, she helps run errands for them, like collecting teeth. More and more black handprints, limiting the chimaeras’ access to the world, are appearing all over the world, and it turns out that Akiva’s behind them.

Here’s the thing: Akiva also has some feelings for Karou. We can’t explain more than that, though, lest we spoil some of the major plot points of the novel. The entire trilogy’s out! You don’t have to wait anymore.

Alas, don’t hold your breath for a movie adaptation. Although Universal bought the film rights and even announced a director back in 2013, little news has come out since.
