Mary Doria Russell
Mary Doria Russell is an author best known for her breakout debut The Sparrow, the winner of Arthur C. Clarke, BSFA, and Tiptree science fiction book awards. It’s glorious and horrific, kind of like, you know, existence. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it’s an amazing novel.
Her other works include Dreamers of the Day, Doc, and Epitaph. The latter two are about Doc Holiday. Yes, Old West, OK Corral and all that. But this author takes a more historical look at Doc and his contemporaries. I am not particularly interested in the Old West, and I never watched or read anything Doc Holiday-related, but I absolutely enjoyed both books.
Mary Doria Russell also wrote the last Holocaust book I have managed to convince myself to read. A Thread of Grace is about the Italian resistance and Jews who escaped the Nazis by hiding among them in Italy.
Her Twitter timeline is lately full of yummy science and history stuff. She’s also quite into convincing people to stop advertising on Breitbart.
