Writing Women: 10 Authors With Must-Follow Twitter Accounts
Susan Orlean
Susan Orlean writes non-fiction that reads like fiction. In addition to long-form essays for The New Yorker, her books include Saturday Night, The Orchid Thief, Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend , and The Floral Ghost. She’s also written two autobiographical works: The Bullfighter Checks Her Makeup: My Encounters with Extraordinary People, and My Kind of Place: Travel Stories from a Woman Who’s Been Everywhere.
Ms. Orlean often tweets about the daily life of being a non-fiction author. She is very involved with animals (her Twitter image is of her with her goats), and they pop up often in her timeline.
Susan likes to tweet details about her life as an author, like working on airplanes. She’s the first professional writer I saw tweeting about using an iPad while traveling. Keeping up with her globe trotting is almost exhausting, but always fun and enlightening.
Susan Orlean is a the kind of person who excels at realizing that mundane, every day activities are anything but. As both a writer and a person, that’s a lesson I need to internalize. Normal is wonderful. It’s something to be cherished, especially juxtaposed with what we now call “The New Normal,” even thought it very much is not.
