January HuesBox: Read My First Impression and Review

facebooktwitterreddit

I tried HuesBox, a new beauty subscription box created for women of color who feel ignored by major beauty companies. Read my review of the January Box!

I happily sprinted to the mailbox a few days ago, mostly because it was raining and I was trying to be quick as possible. But I had a feeling my mailbox would be holding goodies. I was right. My first HuesBox had arrived and I was ecstatic. Anyone who has ever received a monthly subscription will tell you it’s a wonderful surprise, even though you purchased it for yourself.

Self-care is important folks.

So, I carefully opened the package. Inside the box were several items that would nourish my mind, body, and spirit. Earlier this month, I wrote about HuesBox and their mission to curate a beauty subscription box especially for women of color. So, in an effort to support women of color this year (and every year), I signed up. And I’m so happy I did.

What’s In A HuesBox?

Brown & Coconut – Healing Kale Mask

I’ve never eaten kale. But I’ve read its really great for you, and now I’ll be using it on my skin. As a longtime sufferer of acne, I’m all for trying new products on my skin. But I’m using more caution. All natural is preferable, and this ‘healing kale mask’ is made from all the good stuff.

"Our rich, earthy kale mask contains a healing blend of plants and herbs that treat unbalanced and blemished skin. Loaded with vitamin A, kale works to repair and hydrate the skin, while French green clay, lemon verbena, neem, and thyme combine forces to fight acne."

I haven’t tried this mask, but I’m so excited about it! It came in powder form and must be mixed with water to work. It can also be used as a spot treatment. Included with the mask was a handy card with step-by-step directions.

Malie – Green Tea Ultra Hydrating Essence Mask

So I’m not a huge fan of sheet masks. They don’t always fit your face correctly. The eyes, nose, and mouth openings make it hard to see, breathe (from your nose) and talk without eating the goo. But I guess you could argue that none of that is really necessary when you’re trying to pamper yourself and de-stress.

I have read that green tea is really good for your body and heals angry whiteheads. Apparently, green tea is an antioxidant and has anti-bacterial properties. That makes green-tea essential for clearing up pimples the natural way. After trying this Korean mask, I didn’t have any fresh breakouts. I would definitely try it again!

Skin Candy – Stressless Mini Soap Bar

This gem was carefully wrapped in a small box. I really hated taking the ribbon off because it looked so cute and dainty. Once inside, I saw tiny blue soap sample shaped like a heart. It was nestled in a bedding of shredded paper and looked like an egg ready to hatch.

Butters By Jay – Cucumber Suga Scrub

Scrubs are ideal for skincare because they are abrasive, yet gentle enough for most skin. Scrubs help slew away dead skin and impurities, which results in a smoother, healthier complexion. I love the scent of cucumber because it smells really fresh, fruity and pure. There’s nothing I hate more than chapped lips in the winter!  I’ve already used this scrub to make my lips more soft and moisturized. I was very pleased with the sample size I received. It will last me the rest of winter and stores well in the fridge.

Native American Smudge Stick

I’ve heard about Smudge Sticks and always wanted to have the experience. Smudging is an ancient Native American practice, according to the information card included in my HuesBox. It was really used to vanquish negative energy from spaces or a person. Smudge Sticks are made from a combination of herbs and sage. I think it smells really earthy and wonderful. The process – which is listed in depth on the card –  felt symbolic and calming. So if you’re having a fight with your significant other, you might want to smudge the room.
