Fantastic Beasts Earns Two Oscar Nominations

It’s official: “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them” has earned two Oscar nominations, according to Tuesday’s announcement by the Academy.

Their first nod is for Costume Design (Colleen Atwood). The second nod for Production Design (Stuart Craig for Production Design, and Anna Pinnock for Set Design).

The news came in addition to five previously announced BAFTA Award nominations, including Outstanding British Film and Production Design.

The other nominees in the Academy’s Costume Design category include Allied, Florence Foster Jenkins, Jackie and, of course, La La Land. The nominees also up for Production Design: Arrival, Hail, Caesar!Passengers and, you guessed it, La La Land.

While the film is stacked with recognizable competition, it’s worth noting that Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them brought in a whopping $75 million domestically in it’s opening weekend. It surpassed $161 million domestically two weeks later.

Seven out of nine of the original Harry Potter films were nominated for a grand total of 14 Academy Awards.  That’s over all the years Harry Potter was around. None of which they won. They did, however, rake in a number of Saturn Awards, BAFTA Awards and other accolades over the years. And not to mention the hearts of a generation.

J.K. Rowling confirmed in October 2016 that there would indeed be five films in the Fantastic Beasts series, rather than the originally planned trilogy. She later confirmed that the entire series would span over 19 years. The second installment is already planned for November 2018 release, with Director David Yates back at the helm.

The 89th Academy Awards are scheduled for February 26, beginning at 8:30 p.m. EST.
