You Couldn’t Let Them Kiss Just Once?

Now that Prince Albert has officially arrived on the scene, all of us Vicbourne fans have pretty much accepted that our ship is sunk. We get it – no matter how much we might want to believe otherwise, history is what it is. I’m sure we’ll all enjoy watching Victoria and Albert have a passel of kids and a love affair for the ages or whatever. Eventually. After our broken hearts mend a little bit. (This is a process that may take awhile, though.)

But still – couldn’t Victoria have given us poor Vicbourne enthusiasts something? I’m not saying that Victoria and Lord M needed to have a secret passionate night together or anything. As much as we wish history hadn’t happened, we know that the show does probably does have its limits, as far as this particular romance is concerned. (And that’s what fanfiction is for, after all.) But they couldn’t have thrown us a real romantic moment? Maybe given us just one heartbreaking, perfect but obviously never to repeated kiss? Or a hug? Or even just an emotional confession that wasn’t couched in historical references and innuendo?

To be honest, we were probably never going to get any real satisfaction from yelling JUST KISS ALREADY at the television. Victoria isn’t really that kind of show. Most period dramas aren’t. (Just think of how many times we actually saw Matthew and Mary kiss in the first couple of seasons of Downton Abbey. And they were that show’s marquee couple!) But throwing Vicbourne fans a crumb would still have been a nice gesture – and a sign that the Victoria/Melbourne relationship was at least in some small way officially canon. To be fair, we get plenty of less than subtle signals that this is the case. And that’s comforting, but less so than if there were a direct statement on the subject from the couple involved. Or an epic makeout session. Just the once!
